Help Pass Bills to Ban Foie Gras in Your State

Recognizing the cruelty inherent in foie gras production, compassionate lawmakers have introduced legislation in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York to ban the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras. If you live in one of those states, please read below for information on how you can ensure passage of this humane legislation. If you don’t live in a state where legislation is pending to ban foie gras, please contact banfoiegras@idausa.org for information on how to begin the process.

California - San Diego Ordinance

On Dec. 6, 2006, we presented our case to the San Diego City Council Natural Resources and Culture Committee for why the sale of foie gras (liver from cruelly force fed ducks) should be banned in San Diego without waiting until 2012 for the statewide law to go into effect. Chicago banned the sale of foie gras in August 2006. The hearing was televised, and Fox6 and ABC-10 covered it as well. The committee heard compelling testimony from Holly Cheever, DVM, who has toured foie gras farms, and watched a video narrated by Sir Roger Moore (James Bond) showing our animal cruelty investigations into this barbaric industry. Please contact all the council members and ask them to support our proposed ordinance! Christine Chavez and Gloria Steinem have also written letters in support.

Connecticut Foie Gras Bill

House Bill 6866 would ban both the production and sale of foie gras in the state of Connecticut.

Pennsylvania - Philadelphia Ordinance

In June of 2006, Councilman-at-large Jack Kelly introduced Bill 060476 that would ban the sale of foie gras within the city of Philadelphia. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Licenses and Inspections and is slated to be voted on before the end of 2007. If the bill is passed by a simple majority by that committee, it will be presented to the entire Council where it will again need to  be passed by a simple majority in order to be sent to the Mayor's office for ratification.

What You Can Do:

Send a free fax to your City Council representatives. Enter your address, then keep all boxes checked to send a fax to both your councilperson and all Councilpersons-at-large (as they also represent you). If you do not live in Philadelphia, enter "2000 N. 2nd St." in the address line - this will reach Daniel Savage, chairperson of the Licenses and Inspections Committee which is where the foie gras bill will be first voted on, as well as the Councilpersons-at-large.

Be sure to ask the representatives to support Bill 060476, Councilman Kelly's bill to ban foie gras. Inform them of the similar bans in Chicago and California, and that in a recent poll 80% of Pennsylvanians said they are opposed to the methods used to produce foie gras. Also inform them that many restaurants - including leading restaurateurs like Stephen Starr, Neil Stein, and Susanna Foo - have already taken foie gras out of their restaurants.
