Foie Gras Controversy Heats Up

Chicago, Ill.—Dozens of members of the Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL), In Defense of Animals (IDA), Mercy for Animals (MFA), and Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) will gather outside of Bin 36 Restaurant with graphic signs and banners to protest the sale of illegal foie gras on Sunday.

What: A protest against the sale of illegal foie gras (liver from cruelly force-fed ducks)
Where: Bin 36 Chicago, 339 North Dearborn at Marina City, Chicago IL 60610
When: Sunday, January 28 at noon

Due to the cruelty of foie gras, Chicago banned selling the item earlier this year (Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 7-39), but Bin 36 says it is “giving” the item away with an expensive salad. A news crew from TF1, the largest TV network in France, will be flying out to cover the protest and the controversy in Chicago.

“Until the City starts issuing citations to restaurants serving this product of animal torture, we will continue to protest at restaurants that are breaking the law,” states Bryan Pease, the attorney for APRL. “Foie gras is made by force-feeding ducks and geese massive quantities of food to the point of organ rupture and death and was rightly banned in Chicago.”

After the protest is over and the sun goes down, SHARK will arrive with its 13-foot tall “Tiger Truck,” which has video screens on all sides, and continuously drive by Bin 36 and other violators.

Later in the week, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in room 2203 of the Law Department, Attorney Pease will appear before Judge Diane Larsen to argue against a motion to dismiss a defamation suit he filed against Sonoma Foie Gras owner Guillermo Gonzalez.

Broadcast quality footage of investigations on foie gras farms is available upon request. Photos and video are available online at www.BanFoieGras.com.
